Artistic Worksheet: Planning
Due: Tues 12/11

Your name: Alliu
Photographer’s name: Wolfgang Tillmans
Title of Photograph: Chaos Cup

Artist Bio:
Education?: Wolfgang Tillmans studied at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and Design.
Upbringing?:  From 1987 to 1988 he worked as a switchboard operator at a community help organization in Hamburg, where he used the photocopier to enlarge found media photographs. Around the year 1988, he walked into a rave and was fascinated by the culture. He was able to get his snapshots of young people into famous magazines like I-D and Prinz.
Art experience?:
Wolfgang Tillmans has worked for fashion and style magazines, as well as having some of his work displayed in art galleries. Before moving to England, Tillmans also did fashion and style magazine work for companies in Britain.
Artistic background:

Did your artist work in other artistic Mediums (paint, cal etc?)
I have not found any information that would prove Tillman’s artistic work outside the field of photography.
Why is he or she a photographer?
He first realized he wanted to be a photographer when he started collecting photographs and magazine clippings and kept them as a scrapbook at an early age. He did not take photography seriously until the year before he finished high school where he took a picture of his leg while walking at the beach.

What inspires his/her work?
Wolfgang Tillmans was very inspired by younger people and abstraction. He often went to places where young people would interact just so he could take pictures of them.

Has your artist encountered any hardships or successes in his or her life that are directly reflected in their work?
Wolfgang Tillmans received the turner prize in the year 2000. He was the first non-englishman to be given this award. Later in 2009, he was also given The Culture Prize of the German Society for Photography because of his beautiful work.
Your Image:
Why did you select this image?
It seemed the most interesting out of all the photographs I’ve seen by Tillamans. Also it seems like the photograph I would have the most enjoyable time to recreate.

How would you describe your photographer’s style? (in your own words)
Wolfgang Tillman’s style is often random and odd. He takes pictures of some of the most inappropriate things one could imagine and turns them into wonderful works of art. He mainly is focused with people, especially young people, that do not fit the social norm in our society. For example, taking a picture of a woman with a buzz cut hairstyle that is often found in men.
After researching the photographer what have you found most interesting about his/her photographic style or image production?

How are you planning to recreate your photographer’s image?
I plan to have a coffee mug or any mug that looks like the one in the photo and have an object reflecting off the liquid in the cup.

What images do you anticipate taking to recreate this image? (i.e. describe the shots you intend to take to reach your final goal)
I plan to take numerous images of coffee cups and various mugs; in addition, I also plan on practicing different shots of reflections of the liquid in the cups and take the best ones that mimic the original photo most acurately.

When you complete worksheet and discuss ideas with you may begin creating Power Point presentation.
